You can fly to Bordeaux with several options. Ryanair offers flights from Dublin and Cork, while Aer Lingus flies from Dublin only. EasyJet has a route from Belfast. Unfortunately, Ryanair announced that it will be closing its hub in Bordeaux, which might limit flight options in the future.

From Bordeaux Airport to the City

Getting from Bordeaux Airport to the city center is a breeze. A direct tram runs from outside the airport terminal to the city and takes around 30 minutes. The fare is just €1.70, and the tram connects with the city's main tram lines, so you can easily reach your hotel.

Exploring Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a very walkable city, making it easy to explore most attractions on foot. Additionally, the city has an affordable and efficient tram system with four main lines, color-coded for easy identification. You can buy a rechargeable ticket from the machines at the stations. If you purchase the Bordeaux City Pass, trams are included, and you can use your city pass ticket for validation.

Bordeaux City Pass

The Bordeaux City Pass offers great value for tourists. It provides entry to numerous museums and discounts on public transportation. We highly recommend the city pass if you plan to visit a few museums or use public transport frequently. Various options are available, so depending on your itinerary, you may not need it for every day.

City Pass: Start at the Tourist Information Office
Head to the tourist information office as your first stop in Bordeaux. It’s where you can buy your Bordeaux City Pass and get expert advice on planning your trip. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and can help you make the most of your visit.

Bordeaux Weather

Spring in Bordeaux, from March to May, brings pleasant and warming temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C. This season is perfect for exploring the city comfortably before the summer crowds arrive. Enjoy the blooming landscapes and outdoor cafes, but keep in mind that occasional rain showers might occur, so packing an umbrella is a good idea.

Summer, from June to August, offers warm and sunny weather with average highs between 20°C and 25°C. This is an ideal time for outdoor activities, sightseeing, and enjoying Bordeaux's vibrant festivals. However, it can get crowded with tourists, especially in July and August, so plan accordingly.

Autumn, from September to November, sees temperatures gradually cooling down, ranging from 15°C to 10°C as the season progresses. With fewer crowds and beautiful autumn foliage, this season provides a picturesque backdrop for exploring the city. Expect occasional rain showers, so having some rain gear handy is wise.

Winter in Bordeaux, from December to February, is mild compared to northern Europe, with lows rarely dipping below 5°C. This season has fewer tourists and potentially lower travel costs. You can enjoy the festive atmosphere during Christmas markets, but be prepared for the wettest season of the year, so pack rain gear and some warm clothes for occasional chilly days.

Wine Experiences

Bordeaux is a paradise for wine lovers with six different wine regions to explore. A visit to La Cité du Vin is highly recommended, especially if you have the Bordeaux City Pass, which grants you free entry. Although we’re not usually museum enthusiasts, this wine museum was a highlight of our trip. From interactive games like grape stomping to sniffing the many scents of wine, it was an educational and fun experience.

Perfect Itinerary for Visiting La Cité du Vin
When visiting La Cité du Vin, take the tram from the city center for easy access. After exploring the wine museum, head over to Les Halles Bacalan for a delicious lunch. Once you’ve enjoyed the vibrant food hall, catch a bus to Bassins des Lumières for an unforgettable art experience. Note that while it looks close on the map, the bus is the best way to get there. This itinerary ensures a day full of culture, great food, and amazing art.

Museums

Bordeaux offers a wealth of museums for those who enjoy cultural experiences. With the Bordeaux City Pass, you gain free access to 12 different museums and exhibitions, covering topics from maritime history to fine arts. One standout museum we visited was Bassins des Lumières. Set in a disused submarine bunker, this interactive art display was truly unforgettable and unlike anything we've experienced before.

Beyond the City

There are several exciting day trips you can take from Bordeaux:

Saint-Émilion: This charming village is accessible by train (SNCF) from Bordeaux in just 30 minutes. A short walk or tuk-tuk ride will bring you to the village center. Start at the tourist office to get recommendations on which chateaux to visit. Saint-Émilion is easily walkable, but you can also hire a bike to explore further afield. We enjoyed a scenic tour on a puffer train that included wine tasting – a delightful way to see the region.

Exploring Saint-Émilion on Foot
We found that Saint-Émilion is best explored on foot. Even the chateaux on the outskirts of town are within walking distance. From the train station, it's a bit of a walk to the village, but there are a few tuk tuks and taxis available (cash only) if you prefer. So, come prepared and enjoy the scenic walk through this charming village.

The village is home to beautiful restaurants, some of which boast Michelin stars, offering exquisite dining experiences. Wine enthusiasts will find plenty of tasting rooms and cellar tours to enjoy. If you’re in the mood for something different, visit Les Cordeliers, a unique spot specializing in sparkling wine. Saint-Émilion offers a perfect blend of history, gastronomy, and viniculture, making it a must-visit on your Bordeaux itinerary.

Dune du Pilat: The tallest sand dune in Europe, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding forest. It's a perfect spot for a day trip filled with natural beauty and adventure.

What to Eat

Bordeaux is a food lover's dream, with a vibrant gastronomic scene featuring Michelin-starred restaurants, cozy bistros, and lively food markets.

Indulge in local cuisine by trying classic dishes like entrecôte bordelaise, a succulent steak cooked in a rich red wine sauce, or canelé, a sweet pastry with a caramelized crust and a soft custard-like center. Pair your meal with a glass of Bordeaux wine for a true culinary delight.

We were spoiled for choice when it came to bistros. Some of our favorites included:

La Brasserie Bordelaise: Famous for its traditional French dishes and warm atmosphere.

Modjo: Offers modern French cooking in a chic setting.

Madame Pang: A unique spot for fancy cocktails and Asian fusion cuisine.

A foodie highlight for us was Les Halles Bacalan, conveniently located opposite La Cité du Vin. This vibrant food hall offers a lively atmosphere and a variety of delicious food options, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The quality of the dishes is consistently excellent, and it’s the perfect place to enjoy a meal washed down with a delicious glass of wine.
